I'm Outtie Tahoe

Well the deed is done. The u-Haul is packed, the apartment is cleaned, the really bad fast food meals have begun. Tomorrow morning before the sun even comes up Mark and I will be heading out of Tahoe. It's kinda crazy really. Not too long ago I was renting an apartment with Chelsea and 2 crazies and I couldn't believe I was actually going to begin living in Tahoe.

Now I'm gone.

Running Out of Water

David Ficke said over my shoulder the other night at Divided Sky that the next major war won't be over oil but we'll soon all be fighting over water. I quickly turned around and overtook the conversation because I had just read an article about that very fact. The very fact that we are truly running out of water. The Great Lakes are drying up for God's sake!

Waste. Waste. Waste.

My dad made fun of me when I was home because I turned the water off while he was wiping down the counter. We are a culture taught that if we can have it then use it, use it, use it, and forget about wondering where it's coming from.

My downstairs neighbor has been clocked by Mark and I at taking an almost 2 hour shower. It will rain all day and then someone will turn the sprinklers on to keep some hideous patch of grass green.

I'm just at the point where this thought has entered my head: If you have children then why would you not do everything in your power to conserve? Most parents work their asses off day and night to give their kids the best life they can. But life doesn't stop at adulthood.

People think it's cheesy or silly to say 'Think about the world you're leaving your children.' But isn't it true? Don't your kids deserve a world where they won't be bombed because of oil (because it is my strong opinion that this war won't always stay on the other side of the world if things just keep getting worse), or shot because of water. Don't they deserve a life of resources? Don't they deserve a chance to have kids of their own and not bring them into a world that was destroyed way before they had a fair chance?

Lake Okeechobee in Florida. Usually at 5' deep. This is what it looks like nowadays.

Smell that? It's the stink of FEMA

Is anyone else frightened by the fact that a FEDERAL AGENCY will actually hold a fake press conference????

This past Tuesday FEMA held a impromptu press conference concerning their response to the fires in Southern California. It later came out that none of the press asking questions where actually part of the press. They were FEMA public affairs personnel.

Is this not an SNL skit? Who was the genius behind this one? More importantly who were the fellow powers-that-be that nodded their heads and totally agreed "This is a great idea!"

I could try to go on but I'll just let this one simmer.

One Day More

Well besides the fact that Thursday was the slowest moving day EVER my time at Stanford Sierra Camp is almost done. My last day is Friday and I won't have a job again until probably February 2008 (if I'm lucky!). I signed away my benefits and discussed what happens to my 401k. Krazy!

I'm a little perplexed about it all. Yes I've been bored at work but this is also where I've been when I've been away from home. If I'm not with my parents I'm at SSC. What will I do with myself now!?

Anyway, the magazine subscriptions have been put on hold, the netflix will be canceled, the bed and sofa have been sold, the newspapers to wrap plates and mugs have been collected. It's go time.

FYI

Just wanted to share that I want to show all of you pics, some go with the Steve post, some of them are of my friend's wedding but my camera doesn't have a cord to download the pictures off of it so basically I'm having technical difficulties. So maybe in the future I can write "Check out these posts, the pics have arrived!"

My Day with Steve

I got a chance to hang out with Steve while I was in NY. It was a lot of fun. We don’t really talk…ever (I’m still waiting for a return call) but whenever we do hang out it pretty much starts right where it left off…us being great friends from college.

We basically walked a butt load. Which for Steve is no problem but when you’re 5’4” trying to keep up with 6’7” you’re walking a whole lot faster and a whole lot more. Needless to say my legs, which have practically atrophied due to my desk job and living in California where no one walks, were aching big time.

We discussed how advertising can be so fun and inventive if a company has the balls to do it, we dropped in at Katz Deli to eat the most expensive and dry turkey sandwiches I’ve ever seen (you’re supposed to have hot pastrami on rye when you go but I don’t need extra poundage), we perused the San Gennaro Festival which is a celebration of Italian heritage. Apparently Italian heritage means lots of sausage and peppers, deep fried oreos, and imitation designer sunglasses.

There was the short yet amazing conversation where Steve had a high spirited, quick catch-up conversation with a guy who went to Purchase. Steve goes to Fordham, Guy just started at NYU film school, it’s so great seeing you. As we walk away I ask Steve who he was to which he replied “I have no idea.” It really just confirms that Steve is the schmooze-king. I know…you had to be there.
On the way back to Union Square towards the end of our day together we ran into a filming of a truth.com commercial. Something I’ve always wanted to do! After discovering that if you show up in the commercial you getz paid we spent the next 45 minutes moving from spot to spot trying to show up in as many cameras as possible. Upon signing the release waiver to show up in the commercial and getz paid, we got paid. A dollar. Yeah baby!
